Beginning · Ch. 1–3
Basil's Studio — the Portrait is Painted
Young Dorian sits for painter Basil Hallward. Seduced by Lord Henry Wotton's doctrine of pleasure, Dorian wishes his portrait would age in his place. The wish is granted — a Faustian bargain is sealed.
Middle · Ch. 4–9
Sibyl Vane — First Sin
Dorian falls for actress Sibyl Vane, then cruelly abandons her when love makes her perform badly. Sibyl dies. Dorian notices the portrait has already changed. He locks it away.
Temporal Shift · 18 Years
A Life of Hedonism
Eighteen years pass. Dorian descends into moral corruption and excess. His face stays perfectly young while the portrait grows increasingly hideous. He conceals it behind a locked door in the attic.
End · Ch. 13–20
Murder — The Locked Room
Basil discovers the portrait and confronts Dorian, who murders him. Unable to bear the portrait's hideous reality, Dorian stabs the canvas. The portrait is restored to its beauty; Dorian is found dead — old and ugly — on the floor.
